Seen from behind, Bernini’s figure (1622–25) shows Apollo in full stride, his drapery lifted by sculpted wind that animates the marble. Daphne’s emerging bark and halted motion arrest the pursuit at its decisive instant. The contrast between his forward thrust and her transformation articulates a moment where desire collides with divine refusal.
