Decumanus Maximus
This basalt-paved road (1st–2nd cc.) formed the Decumanus Maximus, the principal east-west artery of Ostia Antica. Once bustling with carts, merchants, and travelers, it exemplifies Roman engineering built for durability and expansion. More than infrastructure, it served as the connective tissue of empire—linking port, city, and province in a unified urban rhythm.
