Ásgrímur Jónsson Museum

Ásgrímur Jónsson Museum preserves the former home and studio of Ásgrímur Jónsson (1876–1958), a foundational figure in Icelandic painting as the country moved into the 20th c. His landscapes and folklore scenes translate glaciers, lava fields, and shifting light into images that helped define a modern national imagination. In its intimate rooms, the museum feels less like a gallery than an artist’s working world—where everyday Reykjavík meets the larger, elemental Iceland that shaped his art.
