Dormition of the Virgin Mary

St Mary’s Altar (1434) is the only original altar preserved in Frankfurt Cathedral. The Gothic relief shows Mary on her deathbed, surrounded by apostles who lean in with varied gestures and sorrowful faces. Finely carved figures, detailed drapery, and a gilded background create a dense, stage-like setting. The work exemplifies late Gothic interest in emotionally charged, lifelike sacred drama.
