Angels of the South Portal

These sculpted angels (c. 1230) flank the south portal, their flowing drapery and traces of paint expressing Gothic grace. Unlike the solemnity typical of earlier portals, their inclined heads and raised hands suggest gentle conversation. Such liveliness made this sculpture a landmark of Gothic naturalism, reflecting a vision of heaven suffused with human warmth.
