Notre-Dame Cathedral of ReimsCathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims
Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Reims, begun in 1211 after a fire, became the great Gothic stage of French sacred kingship: from the 11th c. to 1825, monarchs were crowned here with the authority of Reims’s ancient archbishopric. Its west front and portals form a stone scripture of saints, kings, and angels—most famously the Smiling Angel—where courtly grace softens medieval severity. Badly damaged in 1914–18 and painstakingly restored, the cathedral still gathers Reims around a memory of faith, nation, and endurance.
