Chartres Cathedral
The west façade of Chartres Cathedral (12th–13th cc.) embodies Gothic innovation. Its twin towers contrast in style: the south spire, a plain Romanesque cone, and the north, a flamboyant Gothic pinnacle from the early 16th c. The great rose window and sculpted portals proclaimed the city’s spiritual and civic prestige.
