Pont-Aven
Pont-Aven is a small Breton town shaped by the River Aven, whose fast water once turned a chain of mills and still threads between stone houses and low bridges. In 1886 Paul Gauguin arrived here, and the artists who followed formed the Pont-Aven School, distilling rural Brittany into bold colour and simplified form that helped open the way to modern painting. Known locally as the City of Painters, the town’s quiet river landscape carries both working memory and artistic myth.
