Qala’at Ibn Maan, or Palmyra Castle, exemplifies 13th-century Mamluk architecture. Named after Druze emir Fakhr-al-Din II, it overlooks Palmyra in Homs, Syria. Both the castle and Palmyra became UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1980. The site, endangered by the Syrian Civil War, experienced multiple captures by ISIS and Syrian forces, causing damage that remains repairable.
