This Japanese six-panel screen (late 17th–early 18th c.) depicts the Battle of Uji Bridge from the Heike Wars (1180). Samurai, likely Kajiwara Genta Kagesue and Sasaki Shirō Takatsuna, race across the Uji River, capturing the drama of the 14th-century epic, The Tale of the Heike. Painted with mineral pigments and gold leaf on mulberry paper, it served as a luxurious room divider, with gold leaf symbolizing wealth and enhancing interior illumination.
