Representation of the Origin of Life

88
This female figure from the Late Preclassic period (300 BC–200 AD) symbolizes the origin of life and nature’s force. Black accents on her body represent the earth’s interior, a realm of both the dead and life’s beginnings. Her arm movements embody dance, a ritual act signifying life’s presence in religious festivals. This concept, rooted in the Central Gulf Coast Culture, persisted from the Late Preclassic to the Late Postclassic period (1000–1520 AD).
