Museum of Modern ArtMuseo de Arte Moderno
Santo Domingo’s Museum of Modern Art, founded in 1976 within Plaza de la Cultura, is the Dominican Republic’s main public home for modern and contemporary art. Through painting, photography, and installation, its collection follows how artists have grappled with dictatorship and democracy, faith and spectacle, consumer pressure, migration, and the ecological fragility of island life. For many Dominicans, the museum is where recent history turns visible—not as dates, but as images and arguments about who the country is becoming.
