Portuguese Carrack São Gabriel

This late 15th-c. Portuguese carrack was the flagship of Pedro Álvares Cabral’s fleet that reached Brazil in 1500. Armed for defense, it carried square sails on the fore and main masts, and a lateen sail on the mizzen. São Gabriel represents the era’s oceanic ambition, marking the dawn of Portuguese colonial presence in South America.
