The Bow of Automation ShipHans Schlottheim
This bow detail of the automaton ship from Augsburg (c. 1585) shows a snarling beast-head prow and small cannon projecting from the gilded hull. Engraved foliage and heraldic motifs form a shimmering metal surface. Armored figures advance toward a clock crowned by the imperial double-headed eagle. The blend of martial imagery, mechanism, and virtuoso metalwork turns the vessel into a display of imperial pageantry and technical ingenuity.
