Automation Ship Close-Up
This Augsburg automaton ship (1585) shows the Holy Roman Emperor enthroned beneath a canopy, flanked by princes and armored guards. Below him, a line of soldiers mounts the decorated staircase, part of a mechanical procession that once moved, sounded trumpets, and celebrated imperial ceremony. The ornate clock dial at center anchored the performance, blending timekeeping with courtly spectacle. Crafted in gilded metal, the ship exemplifies late Renaissance luxury engineering.
