Saint Sophia Cathedral

743
Built in 1045–50 under Prince Vladimir Yaroslavich, St Sophia Cathedral is the stone heart of Veliky Novgorod and a rare survivor from the age when the Novgorod Republic shaped its own politics and faith. Its severe walls and five domes recall Byzantium yet feel unmistakably northern, a civic as much as spiritual emblem on the skyline. Inside, worn frescoes and the bronze Magdeburg (Sophia) Gates of the 11th–12th cc.—likely taken from Sigtuna after the 1187 raid—testify to a city whose sacred art was formed through far-reaching contacts.
