St Nicholas CathedralNikolo-Dvorishchensky Cathedral
St Nicholas Cathedral, known in Novgorod as Nikolo-Dvorishchensky Cathedral, was built in 1113 on Yaroslav’s Court by Prince Mstislav, placing a major shrine to St Nicholas at the city’s trading and civic heart. Its compact, tiered mass and clustered domes show how Byzantine church forms were reshaped into a distinctly Novgorodian austerity, later softened by painted interiors and surviving fresco fragments. Long tied to the public life of the Novgorod Republic, it remains a quiet emblem of the city’s medieval independence and faith.
