Paul and Barnabas at LystraPieter Lastman

Pieter Lastman’s 1617 painting depicts the biblical story from Acts 14:8–18. In Lystra, Paul heals a man lame from birth, prompting the crowd to mistake him and Barnabas for gods. The priest of Zeus prepares sacrifices, but Paul and Barnabas tear their clothes to assert their humanity. Despite their efforts, Jews from Antioch and Iconium incite the crowd against Paul, leading to his stoning, though he survives.
