Irma and Alicia on St. Peter’s Square
In this view of St. Peter’s Square (completed 1667), Irma and Alicia stand before Bernini’s colonnades and Michelangelo’s dome. At the center rises the ancient Egyptian obelisk (13th c. BC, relocated 1586). The basilica remains the spiritual heart of Catholicism, embodying Renaissance and Baroque grandeur, faith, and papal authority.
