St Peter's Basilica
St Peter's Basilica rises over the traditional tomb of the apostle Peter, turning a site of martyrdom into the ceremonial heart of the papacy. Rebuilt in 1506–1626, it became a manifesto of Renaissance ambition and Baroque persuasion: Michelangelo’s dome crowns Maderno’s vast nave, while Bernini’s bronze baldachin and embracing colonnades choreograph faith into spectacle. For Catholics worldwide it is a place of pilgrimage; for Rome it is a skyline and a memory carved in marble, from the youthful Pietà to the papal tombs below.
