The Seven Sages: Athenaios

This fresco (c. 2nd c. AD) from the Aula dei Sette Sapienti shows Athenaios, one of the legendary Seven Sages of antiquity, seated in contemplation. Part of a decorative program honoring wisdom and philosophy, the cycle expressed Roman admiration for Greek learning within the intellectual setting of the baths.
