Sea Creatures and Trident

This mosaic (2nd c.) shows two stylized sea creatures flanking a vertical trident above linear waves. It formed part of the floor decoration of a bathing complex at Ostia. The marine imagery linked the baths to Neptune and articulated the idea of water as a purifying and life-sustaining element.
