Baroque Grotto, Palazzo Borromeo

Throne Room
Borromeo PalacePalazzo Borromeo
Borromeo Palace rises from Isola Bella as the Borromeo family’s 17th c. project to turn a bare rock on Lake Maggiore into a Baroque statement of lineage and power. Begun c. 1630 for Carlo III Borromeo and expanded over decades, its throne room, shell-lined grottoes, and Flemish tapestries weave collecting, spectacle, and courtly ritual into a single narrative of status. Paired with terraced gardens stepping down to the water, the palace remains one of the lake’s defining images, where architecture and landscape become dynastic theatre.
