State Bed of the King

The bed seen today is a 19th-c. replica, commissioned by King Louis-Philippe in the 1830s when he transformed Versailles into a museum. The original 17th-c. bed, designed under Louis XIV, symbolized royal magnificence but was rarely used for sleep, serving instead as the ceremonial centerpiece of the room.
