Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey
The rocky tidal island carries a dense cluster of stone houses rising to the abbey church and spire. The monastery complex (10th–16th cc.) grew from an early sanctuary into a fortified Gothic ensemble known as La Merveille (The Marvel). Its position amid some of Europe’s highest tides shows how sacred architecture could also function as a stronghold and pilgrimage destination.
