Journey of the Magi

This Byzantine mosaic (early 14th c.) from the Chora Church in Constantinople depicts the Magi on horseback, riding to honor the newborn Christ. Their dynamic cloaks and richly adorned steeds embody movement and reverence. The Chora mosaics, among the finest of the Palaiologan Renaissance, fuse spiritual narrative with artistic sophistication.
