Vision of Paradise

This Barada Panel mosaic (c. 715) on the western portico of the Umayyad Mosque. It depicts stylized trees, villas, and pavilions along a shimmering gold background, evoking the Barada River valley as a vision of Paradise. Created by Byzantine craftsmen for Caliph al-Walid I, the mosaic reflects Umayyad adaptation of Late Antique and Byzantine traditions. Its absence of human and animal figures follows early Islamic artistic norms, expressing themes of abundance and divine blessing.
