Inside the Umayyad Mosque

The Umayyad Mosque, built during the reign of Caliph al-Walid I (705–715), is one of the earliest and most influential monuments of Islamic architecture. This view of the vast courtyard shows its arcaded colonnades, a historic minaret, and the expansive marble pavement whose glossy, reflective surface heightens the sense of openness and light. Raised on a former Roman and Christian sacred site, the mosque remains a major center of worship and a model for Islamic architecture across Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, and al-Andalus.
