Mosaic of the Barada River
This mosaic (early 8th c.) from the Great Mosque of Damascus’ western portico depicts the River Barada with lush trees and clustered settlements, symbolizing prosperity and divine blessing. Extending over 34.5 meters, it evokes paradise on earth. Repaired under Sultan Baybars in the 13th c., it remains a landmark of Umayyad artistic achievement.
