Mictlantecuhtli – God of Death

This ceramic statue (1480–1502) presents Mictlantecuhtli as a standing skeletal figure with exposed ribs and liver, raised hands, and traces of pigment on the limbs and loincloth. Revered by the Mexica as ruler of the underworld, he received blood offerings and embodied the inescapable cycle of death. Discovered at the Casa de las Águilas near the Templo Mayor, it once flanked a northern entrance that signaled passage between worlds.
