Color Reconstruction of Tlaltecuhtli
Studies of the Mexica sculpture of Tlaltecuhtli (15th c.) reveal its original polychromy, unlike the now-colorless Sun Stone or Coatlicue. Six pigments—goethite ochre, hematite red, hematite-magnetite blend, Maya blue, charcoal black, and calcite white—were bound with orchid mucilage. This vivid palette restored the goddess’s visual and symbolic power.
