Campeche Archaeological MuseumMuseo Arqueológico de Campeche, Fuerte de San Miguel
Campeche Archaeological Museum is housed in San Miguel Fort, an 18th c. hilltop bastion built to shield Campeche’s port from attack, its thick ramparts now framing the region’s far older past. Installed in former casemates and gun terraces, the museum is especially rich in Classic Maya sculpture and funerary art—stelae, modeled stucco heads, and jade mosaic masks—much of it tied to Calakmul and the Snake Kingdom (600–900), where rulership, ritual, and artistry were fused into a language of power. Views toward the Gulf of Mexico and the walled city sharpen the contrast between colonial defense and ancient memory.
