Medieval Bone Skates for Ice Gliding

Carved from animal bones, these early skates (item 18) (12-13th cc.) were strapped to shoes for gliding over ice. Used by children and adults alike, they offered both practical movement and recreation. Drawing illustrates traditional skating posture with a pole for balance and propulsion.
