Pudesposus and Dacorosus
This mosaic (2nd c. AD), from the frigidarium of the Terme dei Cisiarii, portrays a cart driver with his two named mules: Pudesposus and Dacorosus. Likely nicknames, Pudesposus may imply modesty or reserve, while Dacorosus could hint at a Dacian origin or spirited nature. These personalized names reflect the Roman tendency to humanize animals integral to daily labor.
