Apotheosis of French Heroes Fallen in the War of LibertyGirodet
This large canvas (1802) shows a crowded ascent of fallen officers and soldiers, guided upward by winged figures while an allegorical woman in a Phrygian cap extends a laurel crown. Created in the aftermath of the Revolutionary Wars, it belongs to the Neoclassical tradition that used idealized bodies and clear contours. The complex vertical composition demonstrates how post-Revolutionary France framed military death as heroic elevation in service of the Republic.
