Metz CathedralCathédrale Saint-Étienne de Metz

1511
Metz Cathedral rose through 13th–16th cc. rebuilding as the bishopric’s power shaped the city on the Moselle. Its soaring Gothic architecture makes a theology of height and light, earning the nickname Lantern of God, most vividly in 6,500 m² of stained glass—medieval panels by Hermann von Münster alongside 20th-c. windows by Marc Chagall—that turns stone into color. For locals it remains both a working church and a civic emblem where faith, memory, and art endure through war and change.
