Christ at Rest
This late Gothic sculpture (15th c.) shows Christ seated on a rocky base, hands bound and crowned with thorns, resting on a carved console against the hospital wall. Known as Christ au repos (Christ at Rest), it formed part of the devotional furnishings of the Hôtel-Dieu. Its quiet pause in the Passion narrative offered patients a model of endurance, suggesting that Christ shared the experience of suffering.
