Lion of Fontenay
This stone lion guards the entrance to Fontenay Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery founded in 1118 by St. Bernard of Clairvaux. The figure, added much later, symbolizes strength and vigilance. It contrasts with the abbey’s original ethos of simplicity, showing how later generations layered memory and symbolism onto this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
