Main Altar

This gilded high altar (17th c.) shows tiered niches with saints, twisted Solomonic columns (spiral Baroque supports), and dense vegetal carving rising toward the vault. It belongs to the Quito School of colonial Baroque, integrating European forms with local craftsmanship for Jesuit worship. Its overwhelming surface of gold leaf indicates how visual splendor reinforced Catholic doctrine and missionary authority.
