Pulpit Base with Indigenous Atlantes
This 18th-c. carved pulpit base is supported by two figures in colonial dress, often interpreted as Indigenous porters. A rare example of Andean visual irony, it reflects colonial hierarchies and the weight of imposed doctrine—both literally and symbolically. Their strained posture bears the Church’s authority within the gilded baroque space.
