El Sagrario Church, beside Quito’s Metropolitan Cathedral, began as the city’s sacramental chapel, named for the sagrario , the tabernacle of the Eucharist. Built in the 18th c., its exuberant Baroque portal and gilded interior embody the Quito School’s blend of Spanish models with Indigenous and mestizo craft.
