Petaca

This petaca (travel chest) (18th c.) shows a low, rectangular box with a hinged lid, its leather covering now worn and distorted. In colonial New Spain, such chests used a rigid cane or reed core wrapped in leather to protect belongings during travel. They carried textiles, clothing, devotional items, and food, turning portable storage into a marker of personal order and security.
