Portuguese Carrack São Gabriel
This late 15th c. Portuguese carrack was the flagship of Pedro Álvares Cabral’s fleet that reached Brazil in 1500. Armed for defense, it carried square sails on the fore and main masts, and a lateen sail on the mizzen. São Gabriel represents the era’s oceanic ambition, marking the dawn of Portuguese colonial presence in South America.
