Lapith and Centaur in Battle
A dramatic scene from the Parthenon metopes (447–438 BC) shows a Lapith gripping a Centaur’s hair, poised to strike. The Centaur’s lifted arms and twisting torso signal pain and resistance. In myth, the Lapiths of Thessaly saw their wedding feast descend into chaos when drunken Centaurs tried to seize the brides. The clash became a moral tale for Classical Athens, contrasting the measured discipline of Greek social order with the destructive impulses attributed to untamed nature.
