Hinton St Mary Mosaic of Christ

This 4th-c. Roman mosaic found in Hinton St Mary, England may be the earliest mosaic image of Christ. The central roundel shows Christ flanked by pomegranates, symbols of immortality, and marked with the chi-rho, an early Christian monogram. Its blend of classical portrait conventions with Christian symbols reflects the gradual adoption of the new faith across the late Roman province of Britannia.
