Pidhirtsi Castle
Pidhirtsi Castle stands on a ridge in Lviv Region as a 17th c. palace-fortress, built in 1635–40 for Hetman Stanisław Koniecpolski to pair aristocratic ceremony with frontier defense. Italianate planning and Baroque façades once anchored formal gardens, a park, and the later St Joseph’s Church, expressing the confidence of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Wars, looting, and 20th c. reuse as a sanatorium—followed by fire—emptied its interiors, leaving a resonant shell, half ruin and half legend.
