Roman Soldier Figurehead on Vasa
This carved Roman soldier decorates the side of the Swedish warship Vasa, built in the early 1620s. Embodying classical valor, such figures were meant to link Swedish royal authority with the military might of ancient Rome. It symbolized King Gustavus Adolphus’s ambition for imperial grandeur during the Thirty Years’ War.
