Indra on the Triple-Headed Elephant at Banteay Srei

68
A pediment from the eastern gopura of Banteay Srei, built in 967 AD, depicts Indra on his triple-headed elephant, Airâvana, above Kâla, the time-devouring monster. This pink sandstone temple, known as the ’Citadel of Women,’ features intricate carvings. Dedicated to the ’Supreme Lord of the Three Worlds,’ it was restored by Henri Marchal in 1931 after an attempted theft by André Malraux prompted conservation efforts.
