Bas-Relief of Garuda and Vishnu
This 12th-century bas-relief from Angkor Wat depicts Garuda, the mythical bird, as Vishnu’s battle steed in the cosmic battle between devas (gods) and asuras (demons). Located on the outer gallery of the temple’s enclosure III, Garuda symbolizes speed and martial prowess, highlighting Vishnu’s role as the universe’s preserver. The scene reflects the Khmer Empire’s devotion to Hindu mythology and its artistic mastery.
