Cave Popcorn Calcite Formation

268
Knobbly calcite clusters known as cave popcorn or coralloids cover this section of the chamber, catching the light in rounded bumps and ridges. Mineral-rich water seeps out and evaporates, leaving calcium carbonate that slowly builds each nodule. Variations in size and density record shifts in airflow and moisture, turning the wall into a natural archive of underground change during the Pleistocene (2.5–1.5 million years ago).
